Attractive foliage with burgundy-red coloring turns brilliant scarlet in fall. Interesting blackish-red bark.

Slender, airy form well-suited for use as a small lawn tree or for patios and entryways. Deciduous. Filtered sun. Moderate grower to 15 feet tall and wide.
Dwarf Type Japanese Maples may be laterally spreading, ball-forming, or dense, slow-growing uprights to 3-12'.
Trees under 6' tall are generally regarded as dwarfs, and  semi-dwarfs could be as tall as 12-15'.
Although most any cultivar (or cultivated variety) is suitable for bonsai, dwarfs are in great demand because they can look good sooner.
The name 'Aratama' means "uncut gem".

Highly desirable dwarf red cultivar. Leaves are brick red to purple red with a contrasting green mid-vein, only grows to 6 feet in 10 years and has a dense, twiggy appearance. Well suited to landscape use and takes full sun well.

Beautiful bright red spring foliage on this dwarf has no hint of purple. Summer brings green into the center of the leaves with only a touch of red remaining on the margins. The tiny leaves turn yellow, orange and red in the fall. Aratama is one of the first trees to come out in spring and somewhat tender and susceptible to late frost damage.

This beautiful cultivar comes from Milan, Italy. It has a refreshing orange color leaf in spring turning lemon-yellow with orange margins and tips.
Upright Bushy Example
This cultivar holds its color well with yellow-green tones in summer. It presents bright yellow gold colors in fall.

It is VERY desirable, making an upright bushy shrub reaching 10 feet in 10 years. Likely to be 12-14 feet on maturity.
It does best with part shade and must not be allowed to dry out or leaves will shrivel.

Dwarf Example
Just 3 to 5 feet tall at maturity, this slow grower is perfect for bonsai in your most elegant container, or a special place in the garden where you can enjoy its changeable beauty up close!

The tiny leaves (just ¾ tall and wide) emerge in spring with pinkish and rusty hues among the red. The leaves grows redder and then turn green during summer and a blazing crimson for fall.
